Guyana Police finds narcotics, firearm during vehicle checkpoint

Georgetown, Guyana: The officers of Guyana arrested a 28-year-old businessman for the offence of possessing narcotics, firearms and ammunition. The apprehension of the suspect was conducted when the officers were on duty at the Itaballi checkpoint.

As per the reports, the officers were at the checkpoint on 22nd April when they intercepted an All-Terrain vehicle and approached the driver of the vehicle. During the interrogation, the officer asked for the license which the driver did not possess. 

Following that, the authorities conducted a search of the vehicle and found a haversack that contained several illegal things. During the search of the bag, 40 pills which were suspected to be ecstasy were found. 

Moreover, the officers conducted a further search of the ATV and found a pistol branded “Springfield Armory USA,” bearing serial #US979040 on the frame as well as ten (10) 9 mm rounds of ammunition.

The officers arrested the driver in connection to the things discovered from him, and he is currently in custody. They all seized all the items which were recovered from the officers and are conducting a thorough investigation into the matter. 

Several residents of Guyana took to their social media accounts and expressed their views on the apprehension and the discovery of the things. 

One person commented “It is good that officers held such kind of operations, it is very necessary to stop the illegal possession of arms and consumption of narcotics. The officers should hold such exercises with the motive to stop crimes in the country.”

Another person commented the following “What is wrong with the people of Guyana? I don’t understand, what are these people doing and what are they up to.”

The authorities have ensured that they will continue to conduct such operations in order to tackle the increasing crime rate. They have promised to maintain peace and security in the country by reducing the crime activities.
