Guyana officers destroy cannabis worth 50 million discovered during operation

Georgetown, Guyana: The police officers of Guyana destroyed cannabis worth approx. 50 million which they found during the operation. The authorities have not arrested any person in connection to the incident but they are conducting further investigation into the matter. 

The officers conducted an “Eradication Exercise” on 20th April 2024 at Kaiwa, Upper Berbice River where their search led them to one farm from where they discovered cannabis in huge quantities. 

As per the details shared by the authorities, the farm was approx. four acres in size and had about six thousand cannabis plants which range from 6 inches to 4 ft in height. The cannabis was later weighed which equals 6600 kg with a street value of Gc ($1,016,400.00). 

Moreover, there was also a small nursery and during the search of that, the officers found 20,000 seedlings. After that, the officers moved towards the ‘makeshift’ camp and on the search of it they found kitchen utensils and grocery items which contained 54.431 kgs of dried cannabis, with a street value of GC ($48,987, 900,00).  

Following the search, the officers took pictures of the farm, nursery and camp and destroyed all the cannabis found there. The tallest plant was found there was taken to the Mackenzie Police Station where it was sealed, marked and lodged. 

Several residents of Guyana took to their social media accounts and expressed their views and opinions on the matter. The residents have appreciated the efforts of authorities and raised concerns over the youngster of the nation to protect them from the harmful effects of over consumption of narcotic substances. 

One person commented “These authorities are doing a good job by conducting such operations. It is very necessary, in order to stop consumption of drugs, as these young people are getting indulged so much in such activities, so it is good to stop them from such things.”

Another person commented the following “The culprits should be arrested as soon as possible and should be given strict punishment and put them behind bars for the offence they committed.”
