Guyana: MoH hosted the First Quarter of the Senior Nurses Statutory Meeting

Georgetown, Guyana: The Ministry of Health’s Office of Nursing and Midwifery, on March 31, 2023, hosted the first quarter of the Senior Nurses Statutory Meeting at the Grand Coastal Hotel on the East Coast of Demerara.

According to the ministry, this two days meeting saw the participation of Regional Health Officers and Supervisors from both the public and the five major private hospitals.

The two-day consultation was held to evaluate the performance of activities that were done in the first quarter and provide training on how to effectively supervise and manage institutions while finding techniques for identifying potential challenges and finding solutions to overcome them.

As per the update, the session is expected to boost management and leadership skills and increase patient outcomes.

During his brief remarks, Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony, highlighted some of the major improvements that the Ministry has embarked on, especially in areas of infrastructure, training and technological advancement.

Accordingly, while advocating for the nurses to have discussions on how to develop the health sector to adjust to the new transformations being seen, especially with technology, Minister Anthony reminded those present that every nurse and doctor should continue to educate themselves and keep up to date with the new guidelines, medicines, and information that are being published on a daily.

The Minister informed the group that the Health Ministry would soon be officially launching guidelines for the diagnosis, treatment and management of diabetes. “You never stop learning in the medical profession, and that is something we have to inculcate in all of our institutions. Right now, we are working on different guidelines, and very soon, we will be launching guidelines for diabetes; some of the treatments will be new, and it is important that both the doctors and nurses become apprised of such”, Dr Anthony explained.

Dr Anthony further stated that over the past two years, legislation was passed for nursing and midwife, which resulted in the formation of a new council, and from that council being in operation, one of the requirements needed, is for all Nurses to be licensed.

According to the Minister, new legislation governing patient confidentiality and data will soon be tabled in the National Assembly.

As per the ministry, present at this meeting were the Chief Medical Officer attached to the Ministry of Health, Dr Narine Singh; the Chief Nursing Officer, Mrs Nalinie Dass-Sutton; Deputy Chief Nursing Officer, Mrs Bhagpattie Ramnarine and other officials.
