Guyana: Ministry of Labour works on strengthening of Moraikobai

Georgetown, Guyana: The Ministry of Labour, along with the Board of Industrial Training (BIT), works to strengthen the Moraikobai community through Human Resources.

As per the official update, thirty-two (32) residents of the Moraikobai farming and logging community situated in the Mahaicony River received technical and vocational programmes offered by the Board of Industrial Training, Ministry of Labour.

A graduation ceremony was held for the batch of trainees at the Moraikobai Multi-Purpose Centre and Guest House on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, where certificates were distributed in Commercial Food Preparation, Boat Building and Garment Construction by officials of BIT.

The update has further claimed that Chief Executive Officer (acting) of the Board of Industrial Training, Saskia Eastman, Senior Technical Officer Bevon Sheperd and Technical Officer with responsibility for Region Five, Jennel Washington, among other officials, attended the ceremony and highly congratulated the graduates and urged them to use their skills as a tool to develop their community, especially within the tourism industry.

The Labour Ministry of Guyana added that they comprised thirty-two (32) graduates, fourteen (14) received certificates in Commercial Food Preparation, nine (9) in Garment Construction and 9 in Boat Building. In 2022, for Region Five, a total of three hundred twelve (312) beneficiaries, with a male-to-female ratio of seventy-seven (77) males and two hundred and thirty-five (235) females, were engaged in fourteen (14) disciplinary areas.

In addition to this, three (3) Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes were launched on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at Maraikobai, Region Five.

Orientation was held for residents of the community who registered for programmes, such as Electrical Installation, which consisted of fifteen (15) trainees, six (6) females and nine (9) males; twenty-five (25) in Joinery, comprised of ten (10) females and fifteen (15) males and seventeen (17) females in Commercial Food Preparation.

The proposed programmes were vetted and selected by the Toshao of the village and other community representatives before the launch. This initiative was carried out to ensure the programmes will serve to improve the lives of the residents and, by extension, transform the community.
