Guyana: Ministry of Labour hosts virtual meet with ILO, discusses adoption of new generation DWCP

Georgetown, Guyana: The Ministry of Labour of Guyana recently shared glimpse of the virtual event organised in collaboration with the members of International Labour Organisation (ILO). The meeting was focused on the discussion about the adoption of new generation Decent Work Country Programme (DWCP), according to the Ministry of Labour.
“Senior officials from the Ministry of Labour and its tripartite partners met virtually today with an International Labour Organisation (ILO) delegation to discuss Guyana’s plan to adopt a new generation DWCP,” the update informed the general public.
It further mentioned that the ILO-NTC DWCP initiative reflects the tripartite commitment of the government, employers, and workers’ organizations to achieve real and meaningful change by establishing partnerships that are more aligned with the country’s current national development goals and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Once a diagnostic process to establish such areas is completed within six months to one year, the team is anticipated to engage in social conversation to identify and agree on a roadmap for arriving at innovative solutions to three national priority areas.
Joseph Hamilton, Minister of Labour, Permanent Secretary, Bishram Kuppen, Ministerial Advisorial, Gillain Burton-Persaud, Chief Labour Officer, Dhaneshwar Deonarine, Senior Labour Officer, Michelle Baburam, and other officials were among the attendees of the event, as per the reports.
It additionally said that Director of the ILO Decent Team and Office for the Caribbean, Dennis Zulu and Deputy Director of the ILO Lars Johansen also attended the meeting.
A similar programme ran its first phase in Guyana from 2012-2015 and then later in 2017 to 2021.
Earlier, the Labour Ministry of Guyana, updated about the successful Sensitization Outreach Campaign in Region Five of Guyana.
The Ministry noted, Grade Nine (9) and Ten (10) students and teachers from Bygeval Secondary School, Region Five (5) benefited from a Sensitization Outreach Campaign on Child Labour in observance of Child Labour Month with the theme “Social Justice for All. End Child Labour.”
Vedmattie Budhram, Regional Labour Officer, led the session to educate students and teachers which covered the definition of child labour, the difference between child work and child labour, the impact and causes of child labour.
