Georgetown, Guyana: The Ministry of Labour of Guyana has recently shared a glimpse of Joseph Hamilton, Minister of Labour, visit to North Sophia Community Centre and Festival City Resources Centre on the morning of June 20, 2023.
As per the update, the Ministry noted that the visit aimed at evaluating the buildings with the goal of providing skill training to residents through the Board of Industrial Training (BIT) so that they may be marketable.
The Ministry noted that it is also consistent with the Government’s manifesto promise to provide its citizens with the knowledge they need to earn a livelihood.
Following the visit, the Minister stated that a BIT team will return to the areas to speak with locals about their desire to participate in the agency’s free training programmes, as per the reports.
Once finalized, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Ministry and the communities will be developed and signed to provide hard skills training programmes.
He was accompanied by Senior Technical Officers of BIT, Leon Greaves and Bevon Shepherd, and Region Four Technical Officers Jason Clarke and Rohan Bishop, among others.
Earlier, the Ministry of Labour continued its Sensitization Outreach Campaign on Child Labour in Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), in observance of Child Labour Month 2023, under the theme “Social Justice for All. End Child Labour.”
The Ministry added that Persaud, Region Four Labour Officer, visited and spoke with Grade Nine (9) and Ten (10) students of Queenstown Secondary School to educate them on the issue of child labour and the detrimental emotional and physical effects that children forced into child labour face.
