Guyana: The Board of Industrial Training (BIT) of the Ministry of Labour trained 5,600 persons in various vocational and technical training programmes for the year 2022.
So far, the agency has certified 4,017 persons for 2022, with the remaining trainees receiving certification this year.
This disclosure was revealed by Minister Joseph Hamilton while defending his ministry’s 2023 budgetary allocation at the 60th Sitting-Twelfth Parliament for the Consideration of Estimates and Expenditure. He noted that about half of the participants were women, which he believes demonstrates their desire to become skilled individuals to integrate into the country’s workforce.

As such, the ministry will continue to encourage more women to participate in the free technical programmes provided by the Board of Industrial Training.
The minister also emphasized the multiple Memorandums of Agreement (MOAs) inked between private and public institutions to increase the agency’s reach. This strategy is intended to ensure that every citizen has equitable access to training opportunities across the country.
Since Minister Hamilton took office in August 2020, 7,500 people have received training to help boost the country’s workforce. The agency expected to train 7,890 citizens in 2023.
