Guyana initiates sensitisation programmes for citizens due to border dispute with Venezuela

Guyana is engaging in sensitization programmes aimed at citizens affected by the border dispute with Venezuela. The nation is very particular about its sovereignty and territorial integrity which is why it has decided to pursue a series of sensitization programmes to counter the influence of Venezuela in the region.

The baser concept behind this endeavor is to maintain the sense that the disputed territory of Essequibo belongs well and truly to Guyana. As a part of the initiatives launched by the government; ministers, officials and organisations that are involved in the exercise are propagating slogans such as ‘Essequibo belongs to Guyana’.

Such statements are being shared on multiple platforms and have been plastered all over public places in an attempt to promote these ideals and bring Guyanese citizens in the disputed territories together under a singular national banner.

It is also important to note that these steps are being taken in the run up to the judgement of the International Court of Justice regarding this dispute, which will be released on Friday.

In the lead up to this judgement, which is expected to be definitive, authorities in Guyana are leaving no stone unturned as Venezuela could react in an unpredictable manner if the order is in favour of Guyana.

In all likelihood, it is expected that the international community will side with Guyana’s cause as Venezuela’s claims are seen as weak and lacking merit. This is why it is important for Guyana to cover all bases and make sure that the region is free of Venezuela’s approaches and influences.

Venezuela has long been attempting to conduct a unilateral referendum in the disputed territories, much to the ire of Guyana.

Hence, it is understandable that Guyana would pursue such measure in light of the history of the dispute and the current developments in this particular case.
