Guyana: Health Ministry organises Development and Implementation of New Nursing Curriculum workshop

Guyana: Ministry of Health hosts a workshop on the Development and Implementation of a new Nursing Curriculum in Guyana.

Today at the Roraima Duke Lodge, Kingston, the Ministry of Health held a workshop with several medical personnel and tutors from various health institutions, who will collaborate and lead discussions on how to bring reform in Guyana’s healthcare sector through developing and implementing a new nursing curriculum.

In his feature address this morning, Minister to Health, Dr Frank Anthony, said that the government had made major investments into the public healthcare system with the renovation of multiple health facilities across the country, the construction which recently began on the new speciality hospital at Goedverwagting on the East Coast of Demerara, along with several new regional hospitals which are soon to be erected.

However, while suitable infrastructure is important for the delivery of quality health services, Dr Anthony emphasized the cruciality of adequate medical personnel. Specific to Guyana’s current situation, the need for a high-quality workforce of nurses. The Honorable Minister also added that the current nursing programs have become outdated and need to be reevaluated.

While the official components of the new nursing curriculum are still being discussed and decided on, Minister Anthony disclosed that it would be a hybrid system, offering a combination of virtual classes for the theoretical aspect of the program and in-person sessions for practical learning.

Also present at the workshop were Dr Leslie Ramsammy, Advisor to the Minister of Health; Dr Narine Singh; Chief Medical Officer; Ms Chandroutie Persaud, Deputy Director of Health Science; Sílvia Cassiani, PAHO Regional Advisor on Nursing; Carla Ventura, Director from PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre for Nursing Research Development (Brazil) and several other medical professionals.
