Guyana: 23-year-old jailed for 3 years for posessing narcotics

A 23-year-old of Guyana sentenced to imprisonment for 3 years for possessing narcotics with the purpose of trafficking it and pleaded guilty.

Georgetown, Guyana: A 23-year-old sentenced to imprisonment for 3 years for the offence of possessing narcotics with the purpose of trafficking it. The apprehension of the accused took place on 4th April 2024, and they pleaded guilty.

The accused has been identified as Alvin Roland, a resident of Good Hope, East Coast Demerara, Guyana. Following his arrest, he was presented before the magistrate where the charges were read against him. 

As per the reports shared by the authorities, the accused appeared at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court #2 and was presented before Magistrate O. Schmidt where he was charged under Section 5(1) (a) (i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act, Chapter 10:10. 

Subsequently, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to imprisonment for 36 months. The residents of the community raised their concerns over the consumption and smuggling of drugs. 

The citizens have lauded the authorities for taking measures and requested them to continue to conduct such operations in order to protect youth from the harsh effects of the consumption of drugs. 

They have requested the administration to conduct such workshops in order to raise awareness of the problems that the usage of drugs can cause. 

Several residents of the community took to their official social media accounts and expressed their views and opinions on the incident. 

One person commented “It is good that authorities are doing their work so smoothly and efficiently. The consumption of drugs should seriously be prohibited and it is great that actions are being taken against the offenders.”

Another person commented the following “Nice to see that, he gets punished, and the authorities took immediate action against him, they should do the same during other criminal activities as well as there are so many murderers who are walking free in the country.”

The citizens have also requested the authorities of the country to take swift action against other crimes occurring in the nation. They have asked to prioritize the safety and security of the nation.
