Guyana’s CANU officers found 536 kgs of narcotics, following successful operation

Georgetown, Guyana: The Customs anti-narcotics unit and GDF Coast Guard conducted a joint operation at Vergenoegen, Essequibo-Island West Demerara, on Friday, March 29, 2024, and found 536 kilos of narcotics. 

As per the reports, the authorities stopped a fast vessel, with two people sitting on it during the exercise. While conducting the operation, the officers held a search of the vessel and discovered a large quantity of narcotics with a quantity of fuel and other items. 

The narcotics found in the vessel were later tested by the authorities and it proved to be cocaine. The officers later weighed the cocaine and it amounted to 536 kilos or 1181 lbs with a street value of $2.6 million USD in Guyana. 

Therefore, authorities arrested the two occupants and they are currently in custody and authorities are probing the matter in detail. The officers have ensured that they will try to get the culprit punished for the offence and have promised to take continuous measures to make Guyana, a drug-free nation. 

Several residents of the community took to their social media accounts and shared their opinions and views on the news. One person with a Facebook account Ricky Speed while giving his opinion commented “Good job by the lawmen Well the court have to fine them 3 times or more of the value and maximum jail term No parole if they can’t pay the fine Just my opinion.”

Another person with a Facebook handle Vernon Lorimer commented the following “What is the name of the two people…every few days you can see on the news. two men caught with 20lbs. Brick-like substances are suspected to be drugs. Man gets caught at some landing with 40lbs..of seeds and leaves, what the hell is going on in Guyana.”

The administration has shared that they are implementing strict plans and policies with a motive to reduce increasing crime rates in the country and also trying their best to stop the overconsumption and smuggling of narcotic substances.
