Grenada athletes to receive grand welcome, returning from Paris Olympics 2024  

Grenada: The Government of Grenada is all set to give a grand welcome to all the athletes who competed in Paris Olympics 2024. The authorities will host ceremonies on two days i.e. Saturday and Sunday in order to honour the achievements and representation of all of the country’s participants in the just concluded Paris Olympics.

Notably, six exceptional athletes from Grenada represented their nation at the Olympic Games in Paris, France. Out of those 6 athletes, 4 competed in Track and Field and 2 in Swimming. Also, the island nation’s three Olympic finalists—Anderson Peters, Kirani James, and Lindon Victor will arrive back to the country on Saturday.

The entire team of the Olympians will be greeted by government officials, sports associations’ executives, and family members. In order to welcome athletes, the Government has urged all the citizens to join the greeting outside of the airport at 2:00 p.m.

Moreover, the celebration of the arrival of all the Olympians will include several exciting activities and events. It will also include a national motorcade on Sunday, August 18, and a recognition rally at the La Sagesse Playing Field.

The motorcade will begin at 9:00 a.m. at Morne Rouge and head westward, passing through Gouyave, which is the hometown of Kirani James. Following that it will down the east coast, including Soubise, the hometown of Anderson Peters. And, the motorcade will conclude at La Sagesse, the home parish of decathlete Lindon Victor.

While shedding light on the weekend’s activities, the Acting Minister for Sports, Delna Thomas stated that it had been put in place to celebrate athletes who have brought glory and honour to the country. Therefore, he urged citizens throughout Grenada to organize and participate in various communities, especially in the events on Sundays.

He asked all the citizens to get together and be part of the grandest welcome ceremony ever in order to celebrate Grenadian resilience and excellence. The Minister also shared that Government will also made some major announcements regarding the development of sports sector. He remarked that all these announcements will be made at the concluding point of motorcade, La Sagesse rally.

The Minister also unveiled that all the Olympians will be awarded some special packages to recognize their crucial participation in such a prestigious international platform. The Prime Minister, Dickon Mitchell will also address all the Olympians and countrymen during this ceremony.

“Let this be a Grenadian moment, because it is,” noted Minister Thomas.

Also, in the Paris Olympics 2024, Grenada claimed one bronze medal in the final of men’s javelin throw at the Paris Olympics 2024. Anderson Peters launched the instrument to a best mark of 88.54m to clinch the medal for his country. On the other hand, Kirani James who represented his nation in 400m lost the medal by few seconds and finished in the fifth position.

The Paris Olympics 2024 was a remarkable event for all the Grenadians and especially the Caribbean region as Saint Lucia and Dominica clinched their first-ever gold medals. As the dust settled on an unforgettable Paris 2024, the flag bearers, Kirani James and Halle Hazzard led the team in a grand finale.
