Fisheries officials fine 4 fishers for catching more than 300 Parrotfish in Barbuda

Antigua and Barbuda: Four fishermen were fined by Barbuda’s fisheries officials as they were caught with a hefty catch of Parrotfish.

As per the statement shared by the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries of Antigua and Barbuda Affairs, the four landed into the river in the unregistered Boston whaler on February 4.

After witnessing something weird, the fisheries officials reached the site and called police for the help as the fishermen were not cooperating and refused to comply. Later the four were taken to the Barbuda police stations here; around 334 Parrotfish were found from the ice coolers.

The investigation is still on in the matter, and reportedly, their vessel has been seized by the authorities. The fishers have been fined; the officials have not disclosed the amount, as fishing of Parrotfish is illegal in the country.

The fishes were handed to the Barbuda community.

The Ministry further stated that the fishermen, from outside of the country, needs permission from the authorities and a special area permit to fish 3.5 miles inside the Barbuda waters. ‘

Barbuda’s fishing regulations –

A valid permit is required to fish or attempt to fish in Antigua or Barbuda, and a special permit is issued by an officer. The special permit is not needed for the fisher of less than 16 years, but he or she must have all the required national or international credentials.
