Dominica celebrates Kalinago Day, honours vibrant culture and traditions

Dominica celebrated the vibrant culture and traditions of indigenous people on Thursday, 19th September, 2024 as they all commemorated the “Kalinago Day” under the theme “Unity in Diversity: Embracing Kalinago Culture!”

This theme aims to bring people from diverse regions together to celebrate the unique cultural heritage of the island nation and Kalinago people.

From mesmerizing dance performances to exquisite crafts and mouthwatering cuisine, the Kalinago Day offered plethora of experiences to all the attendees.

While extending congratulations to all the Kalinago people on this auspicious occasion, the Ministry of Tourism called them the heart of Dominica’s rich history. They noted that indigenous people stand as a testament to resilience, courage, and cultural pride of the country.

The Ministry noted that these Kalinago people have carried the legacy of the island’s first inhabitants for over a thousand years and by celebrating this day, they honour the enduring spirit and wisdom of all those people.

KALINAGO WEEK

It is a celebration that dates back to September 19, 1930. This week is intended to be a tribute to all those brave heroes of the 1930 Kalinago uprising, a celebration of the pride and dignity of the Kalinago community.

Every year, since 1981, the week of September 19, Dominica organizes numerous activities in the Kalinago territory with one and the same objective: to strengthen ties between all Kalinago’s.

Therefore, the island nation is hosting a series of events and activities to celebrate Kalinago Week, effective from 15th September, 2024 in order to commemorate the vibrant culture and traditions of the indigenous people. This celebration not only honours the history and traditions of the Kalinago people but also encourages all Dominicans and visitors to take part in various activities​.

  • Sept 15: Opening Ceremony, Kalinago Expo and Mas Lapo Kabwit Competition, the the honouring of Cultural Elder Mr. Skeet Tyson
