The death of Daniel Langlois and his partner Dominique Marchand in Dominica has sent shockwaves around the world, after their charred bodies were discovered in a burnt-out vehicle on Friday in Dominica.
Considering the high-profile nature of this case and the circumstances surrounding the demise of the victims, Dominica has reached out to Canadian authorities, seeking their assistance in investigating the matter.
Langlois, who was a businessman and philanthropist, was famous for his role in developing high tech animation softwares which have been used to produce Hollywood blockbusters in the past. He is also credited with being the founder of Softimage, a major player in the animation world.
The couple owned an eco-resort in Dominica and were reported to be missing for about a day when the news of their demise was confirmed.
Rayburn Blackmoore, Dominica’s National Security and Legal Affairs Minister, has taken stock of the situation and had this to say on the matter, “This type of terrible crime and the brutality in this crime is something we cannot ignore and we cannot allow those responsible to go unpunished”
According to the information received from Rayburn Blackmoore, three foreign nationals and one Dominican national have been arrested in relation to this crime.
There have also been reports that one of the individuals in custody is an American citizen. In response to this, the US Department of State has said that they are aware of the fact that a United States citizen has been arrested in Dominica. Unfortunately, they sited privacy considerations as the reason behind their silence and refrained from answering any other questions.
Daniel Langlois was also credited with significant philanthropic work through The Daniel Langlois Foundation, which has issued a statement following his death. The foundation stated that, “In the coming weeks and months, details of the exact circumstances of their passing will be revealed as the Dominican police authorities and justice system proceed to the investigation.”
According to representatives of the foundation, Langlois had a “stellar career and left a profound influence on contemporary cinema.”
Just to put things into perspective, Langlois’s software was used for the production of legendary movies like Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Titanic, Jurassic Park and The Matrix. Going by these names, one can easily assess the level at which he influenced modern cinema over the last few decades.
Langlois also shared an Academy Award in the technical category, for his exceptional work on Softimage animation technology.
Langlois’s company was so successful in fact, that in 1994 Microsoft acquired it for $130 million.
As the President of the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma in Montreal, Langlois continued to be engrossed in the art and film industries till his untimely death.
His partner, Ms Marchand was part of the Humane Society of Dominica, a charity that focuses on animal welfare.
To many in his nation of Canada, Langlois was a pioneer in cinematography and digital technology and has left behind an indelible legacy.
