The statue of former Barbados and West Indies fast bowler, Charles Griffith was unveiled at Kensington Oval. Prime Minister Mia Mottley said that the statue should serve as an inspiration for citizens in the country.
The unveiling ceremony of the legendary cricketer was held on Monday. The statue of the National Hero Garfield Sobers is also located there.
While addressing the people in the ceremony, PM Mottley stated that such statues inspire the rest of the population to follow the path of integrity and brotherhood. She gave an example of the cricket team, who played together and bring collaborative opportunities for the people.
“The statues outside Kensington will always be an inspiration to all of us, because if we all do what the cricket team does on the field, play together as a team, bring opportunities together for our people, then I’m sure we’ll look back and think where else would we put statues of all these people who have dominated the game. What we see here is just the beginning”, PM Mottley added.
Such honour from the government made Charles so happy, and he was filled with joy at seeing his statue in Kensington. He expressed his gratitude and said that his continuous hard work enables him to receive all the appreciation he is getting today.
While speaking at the ceremony, he recalled his initial years of his life, which were very tough due to his poor financial condition. He gave credit of his success to his hard work and dedication, which made him believe that due to such efforts he can achieve whatever he desires for.
“My success has led me to believe that anyone can accomplish anything that they set out to do”, Charles remarked.
He extended a vote of thanks to the Barbados Cricket Association, the Barbados Cricket League and the Club he was associated with for their immense support throughout his career.
Additionally, when Charles arrived at Kensington Oval, he was welcomed by the Barbados Police Service Band who prepared a melody of Spouge songs, under the baton of the Director of music Senior Superintendent Andrew Lynch.
