Antigua and Barbuda: Prime Minister Gaston Browne congratulates Sir Vivian Richards, who was conferred with the Order of the Caribbean Community (OCC). The award is presented to “Caribbean nationals whose legacy in the economic, political, social and cultural metamorphoses of Caribbean society is phenomenal.”
Prime Minister Browne, while presenting the award to Vivian Richards, stated, “Richards is indeed one the most devastating batsman in cricket history. He has commanded respect both on and off-field because of his gentle behaviour. Playing the game of cricket for Viv was a science, and his dominance created a sense of pride in the people of the region and was a motivator for young West Indian cricketers and cricketers around the world. Viv Richards and cricket shaped the Caribbean identity.”
Moreover, the Prime Minister mentioned that this recognition by CARICOM is most fitting for a man who has dedicated his talents and beliefs towards making our region stand tall.
Sir Viv is the second Antiguan and Barbudan to receive this prestigious award. Earlier, Vere Cornwall Bird received the OCC in 1998.
Vivian Richards was born Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards KNH OBE on March 7, 1952, in Antigua. The cricketer played for the team West Indies between 1974 and 1991. He dominantly played at number three from the WI side; Richards was regarded as one of the greatest batsmen of all time.
