The Valley, Anguilla: The government of Anguilla, on May 16, 2023, has informed that during the Eighty-Eight Commencement Exercises held at Mercy College in New York, Shakema Ritchie took to the stage to formally receive her Bachelor of Science Degree in Communication Disorders – Summa Cum Laude i.e. with the highest distinction.
About five years ago, Shakema began working alongside Teacher Cislyn Richardson, the current Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) for all the Public Primary Schools in Anguilla. Under the guidance of Mrs Richardson, Shakema gained many impactful experiences in the speech and language field along with the administration of therapy techniques which played a significant part in her success thus far, as per the official update by the government.
She was further introduced to the general public and her accomplishments were told. The social media post by the government read that in 2019 Shakema was awarded a scholarship from the Government of Anguilla to undertake studies leading to certification in Speech and Language Pathology.
Emphasising on her academic carrier, it was stated that she began her journey in January of 2020, about three and a half (3½) years ago. Her attainment of the Bsc in Communication Disorders has brought her to the completion of the first phase of the process. In September of this year Shakema will commence her two (2) years Master’s Program at Mercy College where she will later complete her praxis exam.
Upon her return, following the completion of the Master’s Program, she must complete a one (1) year supervised clinical fellowship which will enable her to refine the skills and knowledge attained during her studies. Upon completion of her studies she will then be required to apply to the Speech-Language governing body to obtain her “Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC_SLP)”, thus certifying her as a Speech Language Pathologist.
Shakema expresses sincere gratitude to the Government and people of Anguilla for affording her this great opportunity.
