Guyana: A 45-year-old Cyril Joseph Dyer alias ‘Bling’ was arrested by Superintendent Roberts at Brickdam Police Station on 26th January 2024 for the offence of possessing firearm and ammunition. It is to be noted that the charges were read against him on Tuesday.

Notably, Cyril Joseph Dyer has been identified as a fast-food vendor of Light Street, Alberttown, Georgetown, Guyana.

As per the information, Cyril Joseph Dyer visited the office of Superintendent Roberts at the Brickdam Police Station to have his Firearm Licence renewed. Subsequently, it was discovered by the authorities that he was not a holder of a firearm licence. Also, the officers found one 9mm Glock pistol and thirteen 9mm rounds of ammunition from Cyril Joseph Dyer.

According to the reports, the accused appeared on Tuesday at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court before Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus, where she read both charges to him. The charges include:

  • Possession of Firearm without license.
  • Possession of Ammunition without license.

The charges were laid against him contrary to Section 16(2)(a) of the Firearm Offences Act, Chapter 16:05.

Moreover, he pleaded not guilty to both charges and he was granted bail. He was given bail under the fulfilment of certain conditions, which included that he had to pay a sum of one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000).

The matter has been adjourned till now and the next hearing will be held on 21st February 2024.

Various residents of the community also took to their social media accounts to share their views on the matter. One person with a Facebook account, Andrew Liverpool, commented, “The police is a part of the obtaining this license, this stupidness must be stopped in Guyana. Do an investigation to see how he obtained the license; he knows that the police gave you this license, so I know he is only making himself a fool.”

Another person with a Facebook handle, Glynis Gibson, commented the following: “Well, he should find a lawyer and spill all the beans. The next court day, perhaps that is the reason why he pleaded not guilty. But it sounded really stupid. “He” took the gun to obtain a new licence. Lol.”
