Castries, Saint Lucia: The Darren Sammy Cricket Ground which recently hosted 6 games of ICC Men’s Cricket T20 World Cup 2024 was spared the wrath of Hurricane Beryl on Monday.
Acting Director of Sports, Clivus Jules, stated that they held a preliminary assessment of the sporting infrastructure in the island nation. He further added that the assessment revealed that no structural damage had been recorded yet. However, little water was found in certain facilities. He also asserted that their officers are still on the ground and are conducting a more comprehensive assessment and a report will be forthcoming once these assessments have been conducted.
“As of this morning, we can report that there has been no major damage to Saint Lucia’s sporting infrastructure,” noted Clivus Jules.
Moreover, the Acting Director also remarked that the playing surface of Darren Sammy Cricket Ground is held up very well. He noted that the drainage issues the facility was facing before don’t seem to be evident now, given the volume of water that accompanied Hurricane Beryl. He stated that as of now, everything is still intact, and the rain did well for the grass.
Clivus Jules also disclosed that the Soufriere Mini Stadium had gotten some water but the facility was already going through some leakage issues even before Hurricane Beryl struck.
Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, Philip J Pierre also recently visited Soufriere post Hurricane Beryl in order to assess the damage created in the region due to the devastating effects of Hurricane. He also assured all the residents that his administration is making all the possible efforts in order to recover the damage caused due to Hurricane Beryl.
He stated that the Soufriere waterfront was highly impacted by storm surge activity. On the other hand, in Vieux-Fort, the main jetty facility used by the Police Force’s Maine unit was also completely destroyed due to a storm, which was associated with major Hurricane Beryl.
Although, the Pierre led administration has activated disaster response teams that will commence clearing debris, blocked roads and drains in affected areas in order to ease the working of the citizens of the nation.
Notably, all storm advisories for Saint Lucia are discontinued but still the administration has asked all the residents to be vigilant and active.
