The Ministry of Youth Development and Sports of Saint Lucia has announced to acknowledge its star player, Johnson Charles for his vital contribution towards leading Saint Lucia Kings to their first-ever Caribbean Premier League’s title.
This announcement was made by the Minister of Sports of Saint Lucia, Kenson Casimir during the Saint Lucia Kings Homecoming celebration at the Derek Walcott Square last week. This honour is a testament to the countless exceptional performances by Johnson Charles for Saint Lucia Kings at the Caribbean Premier League 2024.
The Minister added that Johnson Charles has played a huge role in developing Saint Lucia’s cricket sector. He also highlighted about the hard-hitting batting by Charles in this 2024 season, scoring 452 runs at an average rate of 41.09.
His highest score in the Caribbean Premier League 2024 came against Trinbago Knight Riders, scoring 89 runs in 40 deliveries. The player played some crucial knocks in several matches, turning out to be the saviour for Saint Lucia Kings in several games.
Therefore, the Ministry of Youth, Development and Sports of Saint Lucia announced to rename the link road from ‘Vanard to Anse La Raye’. This road will be known as the ‘Johnson Charles Highway’, celebrating his heroic contribution in helping Saint Lucia Kings win their first ever CPL title.
Also, the authorities have announced to establish the ‘Johnson Charles Cricket Academy’ in Charles’s home community of Millet. Along with that, they also declared to rename the Millet Playing Field to the Johnson Charles Cricket Ground, commemorating his contributions to the development of cricket.
Minister Casimir said that the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports of Saint Lucia is committed to the development of sports in the island nation. He added that they are making several possible efforts and has ensured to continue to do so in future with a vision to elevate the growth of sports sector to greater heights.
He added that they are committed to encourage the likes of Shadrack Descarte, McKenny Clarke, Ackeem Auguste and motivate them to do their best, train hard, play hard, work hard and pray hard.
Saint Lucia wins CPL 2024
Saint Lucia made a historic victory at the CPL 2024 by dethroning Guyana Amazon Warriors to claim their first-ever Caribbean Premier League title. Saint Lucia Kings won the Final by 6 wickets with 11 balls to spare, defeating the Warriors in their home ground.
Though Charles was not able to shined with his bat, his overall performance in the CPL 2024 reflects the role he has played for his team in helping them reach the final stage.
