Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis: The climate-smart homes are one of the significant projects undergoing in St Kitts and Nevis which aims to offer affordable homes to the citizens of the island nation. Currently, there are about 20-plus homes whose construction is already ongoing, with more to commence in the following week.
Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew is continuing with his promise of sharing the glimpses of the construction projects that are taking place at St Kitts and Nevis. While sharing the glimpses of the project, he noted “As promised, I continue to post construction projects taking place at the moment. Today I post NHC houses under construction.”
This crucial project is a collaborative effort between National Housing Corporation and Government of St Kitts and Nevis. Under this programme, the government aims to offer affordable climate-smart homes in order to enrich the citizens through the ownership of homes.
The project was initiated with a commitment from the administration of St. Kitts and Nevis to deliver a total of 2400 modern and energy efficient climate smart homes to families over the period of five years. The first phase of the project was commenced in the island nation in March 2024 when two homes were distributed to the residents of Conaree.
The homes were handed over to individuals such as Shamarah Huggins of Conaree and Belinda Buchanan of Taylor’s. During the time of the handing-over ceremony, PM Drew reiterated his commitment to promoting sustainable living by constructing smart homes.
The process was started with the reviewing of the applications and the reconfiguration of 1-, 2- and 3-bedroom architectural designs. The main objective behind this new housing plan was to restore confidence in the minds of working-class citizens and enhanced standard of living of the residents of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.
These climate-smart homes will also be equipped with modern facilities and amenities which includes, solar energy, water storage tanks which have never before seen in the National Housing Corporation affordable homes.
