The match between Barbados Royals and Trinbago Knight Riders at the Guyana National Stadium on October 1, 2024, proved to be quite an electrifying Caribbean Premier League (CPL) match, at least in the initial phase, which saw three of the six stadium floodlights suddenly breakdown.
It was expected to be another thrilling game in the tournament but turned out to be a frustrating delay after this unexpected technical glitch. Fans and players were kept on wait for nearly three hours.
The mishap happened during the 19th over of the Knight Riders’ innings when the team was all set at a good score of 168-3. The blackout occurred because of the failure of an independent generator which was powering the lights and not because of the fault in the national grid.
The point behind setting up this generator was to ensure that the power supply at this stadium is never disrupted. The three floodlights sharing the same circuit got affected due to a malfunction of this generator.
The Guyana Power and Light (GPL) company, which had technicians on standby, quickly mobilized to provide relief, restored power to two of the lights within a short period after the outage, but the third light was out of commission for a considerable time owing to an underground cable fault.
A replacement cable was installed, but the game would not resume until close to 10:51 pm much to the disgust of the fans that attended and also to the viewers of the game. At this point, Trinbago was in such an advantageous position that such a long delay had people questioning whether the stoppage would influence the outcome.
The delay left the match officials with no option but to use the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method to calculate the new target for Barbados Royals. In the new conditions, Royals had to score 60 in mere five overs, which was a tough situation.
Even though everything was going against his team, David Miller, the captain of Barbados Royals, produced an unbelievable knock and out of nowhere hit 50 runs off 17 balls flag bearing his team to the win with even four balls to go.
Although fans applauded Miller’s heroics, they were more annoyed by the lighting failure as an interruption. All over social media, there were comments expressing how the situation was handled, starting to question the length of the delay and if it could have been helped for a better contingency plan.
This blackout raises a concern on the infrastructure of such sporting venues. Both GPL and the technical team of the stadium took long in finding the solution, but it directs attention toward contingency planning for such critical failures of equipment.
Further assessments will be done in order to avoid such disruption in future matches. The CPL is known for their fast action and electrifying atmosphere, thus, the need for reliability in stadium infrastructure asks for call of action for such an anticipated league.
