Grenada: Two-time CARIFTA Games silver medal winner Cheffonia Houston shines in her 2024 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations, scoring 13 passes with six “A” profiles.

Cheffonia Houston is one of the most promising young female athletes of Grenada who has been constantly proving her exceptional talent, skills and abilities on track and in the classroom.

In the last three years, Cheffonia Houston has been acknowledged as the top Under-20 female track and field athlete of Grenada. In 2023, she dominated both local and regional athletics and became the top point scorer at the Anglican High School Athletics Championships, the National Championships, the Intercol Games, and the Windward Island School Games.

In the month of January, she participated at the TASVG Sprints, Hurdles, and Throws which was held in St Vincent and the Grenadines. She recorded her personal best time of 55.03 seconds in the 400 meters and proved her worth.

Along with that, she also secured two silver medals for Grenada in the Mixed 4x400m Relay at this year’s CARIFTA Games.

Her consistent performances in athletics have made her the leading force in Grenada sports. Despite her tough schedule in athletics, she decided to take a break from athletics and prepare for her 2024 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations, sitting for 13 subjects.

After the completion of her exams, she participated at the NGC/NAAATT Junior & Senior Championships which was conducted at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. There, she clocked the fastest times in the 200m and 400m preliminaries for Under-20 Girls.

However, she could not make it to the finals because of the rule introduced by the organizers that only local athletes would compete in the semi-finals and finals.

Following her result, the Ministry of Youth, Sports of Grenada recognized her and called her the true example of hard work and dedication. They noted that her academic and athletic successes are a testament to the unwavering commitment and dedication of her towards both her studies and sports.

They stated that her achievements are a source of inspiration who wishes to excel both in sports and focus. They noted that her accomplishments also reflect her discipline and determination towards her goals.

Notably, Cheffonia is a member of the South City Rising Stars Track Club which is headed by Lee Cuffie. The Club is the same outfit that produced Gamali Felix, the 2021 NJCAA National Indoor Champion in the 400m.

Also, the Ministry of Youth, Sports of Grenada congratulated Cheffonia and extended best wishes to her for her future.
