Trinidad and Tobago pays tribute to calypso icon Denyse Plummer-Boocock

Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago: Trinidad and Tobago remembered and paid tribute to its calypso icon – Denyse Plummer-Boocock, who was laid to rest on September 6.

The National Archives celebrated her life with some snippets from its Newspaper Collection, showcasing her 2001 win at the National Calypso Monarch. She was the third woman to win the National Calypso Monarch title, following in the footsteps of legendary calypsonians Calypso Rose and Singing Sandra.

According to the update, Denyse Plummer broke barriers when she first emerged on the calypso scene during the 1980s, often facing criticism onstage during her early performances as a female calypsonian in what has traditionally been seen as a male-dominated field.

She never let this deter her, however, and adamantly portrayed her love for her craft to the best of her ability, which earned her multiple crowns as Calypso Queen and the 2001 National Calypso Monarch Title with her popular songs, “Nah Leaving/Heroes”.

In addition to this, the National Archives of Trinidad and Tobago shared photos of the legendary artist performing at various international events.

Many Trinidadians took the comment section of the post and paid their tribute towards the legendary calypso. Along with this, some also remembered her songs, which were counted as the most iconic and enjoyable songs.
