Trinidad and Tobago: Herpes is a very common sexually transmitted infection. There is no symptoms of the infection for many years. This makes it difficult to get identified so being aware is needful.

Herpes can be categorized as Oral herpes and Genital herpes. When the infected area is mouth or near to it, it is considered to be oral herpes, However, when it is on or near to the sex organs, it is genital herpes. Former one is caused by Herpes simplex virus type 1(HSV-1) and the latter one is caused by Herpes simplex virus type 2(HSV-2).

Such an infection is spread by kissing and sexual contact from vaginal, anal and oral sex. Simply, a brief skin to skin contact can pass the virus. And, it is most easily passed when the sores are open. Even, these can be spread where there are no symptoms present.

This evidently gives an idea of the risks it includes. Strange is the part not even it is possible to identify who passed the infection to whom as for a long time, there comes no symptom to most people.

“Most people with genital herpes have no symptoms, have very mild symptoms that go unnoticed, or have symptoms but do no recognize them as signs of infection,” mentioned the Health Ministry of Trinidad and Tobago.

Although, when these can be noticed is known as initial herpes. These are more noticeable than other outbreaks that occur later. During this stage, the symptoms include swollen, tender glands in the pelvic area, throat, and under the arms. This as well includes fever, chills and headache.

Moreover, the common symptoms as well can be clusters of blistery sores on the vagina, vulva, cervix, penis, buttocks, or anus. They may last several weeks and then go, even may return in weeks, months, or years.

Prevention for the infection is necessary as there is no cure for herpes. However, medications can shorten and prevent outbreaks. And, only the health providers can diagnose it through blood tests.

Considerably, for its prevention, correct and consistent use of latex condoms while intercourse can be considered as this can reduce the risk of genital herpes. And, the ones who are infected with it are required to restrain themselves from sexual activity.
