St Kitts and Nevis: The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Resources of the country will host a Feral Animal Control Consultation on February 13, 2024 (Tuesday). This will take place at the Agri Large Conference Room, the timing for the same is 5 pm to 7 pm.
This two hour long consultation address will provide an opportunity to the general public, farmers, backyard gardeners, food producers and other agricultural stakeholders to engage in the discussion. Such a discussion will include the strategies that can help alleviate challenges caused by wild pigs and the monkey population.
“Are you tired of dealing with the impact of Feral animals on your property and farms? Are invasive species causing havoc with your local environment? Then this is the forum for you!” mentioned the Agriculture Ministry.
This statement clearly states that the consultation will provide the stakeholders with every possible solution to help meet the challenges.
The country is making significant efforts for the growth of the agriculture department. The country recently received 9000 seedlings from St Vincent and Grenadines under the collaborative action between the government of St Kitts and Nevis and IICA (Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture). This will also provide support towards contributing to getting on a 25 by 25 agenda.
The 25 by 25 agenda directs towards decreasing imports by 25% for the purpose of food security. The deadline to this has also been projected to 2025. To achieve this, one of the citizens also presented a suggestion, which included reducing the monkey population as a possible way to achieve this agenda.
Notably, as the Feral Animal Control Consultation will include the discussions which will be beneficial for food producers, can align with achieving the 25 by 25 agenda as well.
