Shafiqua Maloney qualifies for 12th edition of World Athletics Championship in Tokyo
Shafiqua Maloney qualified for the Tokyo World Athletics Championship 2025 after ending her season 2024 with the bronze medal at World Continental Tour.

Shafiqua Maloney has emerged a place in the World Athletics Championship 2025 and is all set to represent St Vincent and the Grenadines in Tokyo. She recently ended her season in 2024 with the bronze medal at the World Continental Tour and qualified for the Championship 2025.
Shafiqua Maloney participated at the World Continental Tour and finished the race with an exceptional time of 50.75sec, claiming bronze medal in the 400m event. She has earned the opportunity to participate at the Tokyo World Athletics Championship 2025.
The 12th edition of the championship will take place from 13 to 21 September 2025 in Tokyo, Japan. This is the third time that the championships will be held in Japan, following the 2007 event in Osaka, and the 1991 event in Tokyo at the former National Stadium.
In this championship, more than 2000 athletes from around 200 nations are expected to come to Tokyo to participate in one of the sporting events of the world.
The qualification system for this championship will be based on a combination of entry standards and the rankings in the world. The entry standards have been set with the motive of qualifying about 50% of the athletes.
As per the rules, the top three athletes in the 2024–25 World Athletics Cross Country Tour which have not qualified through any entry standards or other ways are deemed to be qualified for the Championship.
It has been a very challenging season for Shafiqua Maloney as she was placed in 4th position in the 800m Paris Olympics final. She missed out on winning the first-ever Olympic medal for the country by just a gap of milliseconds, finishing the race in 1:57.66 seconds.
It was really heartbreaking moment for the citizens of St Vincent and the Grenadines as she missed out on winning the medal for her nation by a gap of just few seconds. However, she did not lose any hopes and promised to continue to work hard to bring laurels to her nation.
She bounced back and after the Olympics, she competed in her first Diamond League Meet and secured the second position by finishing the race with a time of 1:22.98 sec. She finished behind Mary Moraa, who achieved a new World Record of 1:21.63 in this rarely contested event.
With this victory, Shafiqua claimed the 7th spot on the world all-time list. Maloney has been showcasing her exceptional talent and determination.
