Shafiqua Maloney secured the second position in her first Diamond League Meet at the ISTAF Berlin Meet 2024, clocking a time of 1:22.98.
In her first-ever Diamon League, Shafiqua broke the national 600m record, which she had set earlier this year and secured the second position. She was trailed behind Mary Moraa, who achieved a new World Record of 1:21.63 in this rarely contested event.
Her previous record of 1:23.80, set by her in the month of April this season, has now been surpassed. Now, with this exceptional time, Shafiqua Maloney has claimed the 7th position on the world all-time list.
While expressing her excitement on competing in the event, she noted that “I participated in the 600m today and it was good to be back at that distance.”
“I finished with a time of 1:22.98 which was good enough for a few entries in the journal.” The new record set by Shafiqua Maloney is not only her personal best but also the new National record and 7th best of all time in the world.
Also, recently, Maloney participated in the Paris Olympics 2024 and became the first ever athlete from St Vincent and the Grenadines to have secured a spot in the final events. She secured a spot in the women’s 800 meters track finals in Paris after finishing 2nd in her semi-final, in a new national record.
However, she missed out on winning the first ever Olympic medal for the country by just a gap of milliseconds. As, she finished in fourth place, clocking a time of 1:57.66 in the 800m Olympic finals in Paris.
It was really heartbreaking moment for the citizens of St. Vincent and the Grenadines as she missed out on winning the medal by a gap of just few seconds. But she did not loose any hopes and promised to continue to work hard to bring laurels to her nation.
And, that is the reason that following her 4th-place finish in the 800m Olympics final, she competed in her first Diamond League Meet and secured the 2nd position.
Her never giving-up attitude is a testament to the unwavering commitment and dedication of the athlete towards the accomplishments that she is receiving on an international platform.
Moreover, the citizens of the country have flooded the social media accounts with the congratulatory messages and are sending her the best wishes for her upcoming races.
One person commented “Fly flag high Maloney, well done on your achievement. You are truly the star of the country.” Another wrote “Many congratulations you rising girl, many more achievements on your way.”
