Saint Lucia’s National Sports Awards, know results

Castries, Saint Lucia: The Ministry of Youth, Development and Sports of Saint Lucia announced the winners of the 42nd National Sports Awards. It is to be noted that the ceremony was conducted on Saturday, 17th February 2024. 

The awards were presented to the sportsperson who displayed their unwavering determination and contribution towards the sport. The awards were presented to the players for their outstanding performance in sports and games in the last year and for showcasing their qualities of sportsmanship, leadership and a sense of discipline. 

Moreover, the award ceremony was held to recognize the significant achievements made by athletes throughout the year. 

The winners of the award include, 

2023 Junior Sportswoman of the Year – Zaida James.

2023 Junior Sportsman of the Year – De Andre Calderón

2023 Senior Sportsman of the Year – Johnson Charles

2023 Senior Sportswoman of the Year – Julien Alfred.

Zaida James is a Saint Lucian cricketer who plays for the team for Windward Islands women’s cricketer team in the Super50 Cup and Twenty20 Blaze tournament. She was also named as the captain of Saint Lucia Senior Women’s cricket team. She has also displayed her skills, talents, techniques and abilities. She has an aim to inspire young girls and boys to get them into the field of cricket.  

De Andre Calderón is a table tennis player who has always been passionate about his sport. He is a perfect combination of hard work, talent and dedication who has captured the hearts of his fans and followers with his excellent performances in his games. 

Johnson Charles, the Saint Lucian and West Indies cricketer was awarded the Senior Sportsman of the Year 2023 for his outstanding performances in the field of cricket. He upholds the virtues like teamwork, ethics, and sportsmanship. He has always been a team player, who has always played selflessly for his nation. 

Julien Alfred, Saint Lucian sprinter was named the Senior Sportswoman of the Year who has won several awards and medals for her country, showcasing her passion for sports and country. 

Various residents of the community took to their social media accounts and extended congratulations to all the winners. 

One person with a Facebook account Kimmie Kim commented “Congratulations everyone on your achievement! You made us proud. You have proved your worth, you are truly out of the crowd, stay blessed. Congratulations to you all.”

Another person commented the following “Congratulations everyone. Well deserved. You guys definitely deserve the title.”
