Saint Lucia set to host Women’s Parliamentary Caucus

The Parliament of Saint Lucia will be hosting previous and present female Parliamentarians for a special meeting and luncheon to formalize the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus.

Castries, Saint Lucia: The Parliament of Saint Lucia will be hosting previous and present female Parliamentarians for a special meeting and luncheon to formalize the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus. 

Notably, it was initiated on December 29, 2021. The female Parliamentarians will deliberate on the structure, management and objectives of the Caucus on Friday.

It is to be noted that the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (November 25- December 10) will coincide with this meeting, scheduled for Friday, December 8, at 9:30 am in the Parliament Chamber.

The event reaches a pinnacle with a special luncheon, which will be organized in the Members’ Lounge.

The deliberation will include the following objectives of the caucus,

– Fostering the capacity of women parliamentarians as effective legislators and representatives

– Presenting a forum for discussion on matters which affect the women in the country, regionally and internationally across the party lines

– Lobbying for support from non-government and inter-governmental organizations

– Promoting and encouraging solidarity among the women in general and across the women parliamentarians in particular

– Networking with other organizations and institutions concerned with issues pertaining to women and women’s participation in the political process.

It is to be added in the remarks of the Parliament of Saint Lucia that one of the outcomes of the meeting is to establish a manoeuvre committee or interim executive to manage the business of the caucus in the coming months.

Women’s Parliamentarians’ Caucus is a special parliamentary mechanism that unites women parliamentarians from different geographical areas, political parties, and religious and ethnic groups together under one objective.

Events

This Caucus conducts its activities through advocacy in Parliament, workshops, training, awareness programmes, conferences and outreach activities.

Key Objective

One of their prime objectives is to ensure the consolidation of the individual and collective power of the membership of the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus.

They have carved themselves a few broad areas of work that they expect to bring substantial equality for women and underrepresented groups. Notably, the main agenda is to empower women across the globe.
