Saint Lucia: Prime Minister Philip J Pierre congratulated the African community on the occasion of the International Day for People of African Descent.
“On this occasion of the second observance of the International Day for People of African Descent, in the seventh year of the United Nations Decade for People of African Descent, I am pleased and proud to join in celebrating the triumphs of people of African Descent in Saint Lucia, the Caribbean, and the world over,” the congratulatory post by PM Pierre read.
This day for People of African Descent is another for deep introspection as to where we are today, at home, across the regions, and around the world.
Prime Minister further stated, “Today, more of our people are learning who we are and, where we came from, who our Freedom Fighters and Emancipation Heroes were. More of our people know today that our Freedom Fighters, our famous Neg Mawon, defeated the British in the Battle of Rabot in Soufriere — and banned Slavery across the island from 1795 to 1796.”
He added that the government had dedicated a memorial to the esteemed lady freedom fighter from Dennery, Petronille, and yesterday they celebrated La Woz in a new light in Castries.
Saint Lucia also continues to support CARICOM’s quest for Reparations from Britain for Slavery and Native Genocide, and we welcome the African nations showing interest in joining us in this common quest of mutual interest.
Fellow Saint Lucians, my appeal to all of us at home and abroad today is to make the very best of what today offers – and let’s strive forever to Make Every Day a Day for People of African Descent.
