Castries, Saint Lucia: Saint Lucia will mark the completion of 40 successful years of the recognition of Jounen Kwéyòl in the nation. In the year 2023, Jounen Kwéyòl will be observed on October 29, as it is celebrated on the nearest Sunday to the international observance of World Creole Day on October 28.

Jounen Kwéyòl generally is a month-long celebration. It is marked by paying tribute to the Kwéyòl culture, tradition and heritage. Various aspects, including Kwéyòl language, practices, food, drinks, and dresses, are celebrated during the month of October.

This year, Creole Heritage Month will be observed in three Saint Lucian constituencies: Canaries, Soufriere, and Mabouya Valley.

It is worth mentioning that Jounen Kwéyòl is incepted by the Monsignor Patrick Anthony Folk Research Centre (FRC). This year, FRC will also mark 50 years of its establishment.

Jounen Kwéyòl is not only a festival to celebrate, but it also aims to make Saint Lucians aware of the strength and values of the Kwéyòl language. It holds various significances, assisting in the understanding and development of its rich cultural resources.

The objective of the celebration of Jounen Kwéyòl is as follows:

  • Provides the communities with a way to share and learn about their rich cultural heritage.
  • Becomes a platform which brings the communities together irrespective of their creed, colour, class, affiliation, partisan and cultural development.
  • Develop confidence among Saint Lucians to communicate and express themselves through the Kwéyòl language.
