Saint Lucia Kings dethroned the defending champions Guyana Amazon Warriors to claim their first-ever Caribbean Premier League title in 2024. They clinched their maiden CPL title with a commanding victory over the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the finals, winning by 6 wickets with 11 balls to spare.
The match was played at the Guyana National Provide Stadium, where it began with Saint Lucia Kings winning the toss and deciding to bowl first. The decision taken by the Captain of the Kings, Faf du Plessis was backed by Khary Pierre by getting rid of the dangerous batsman of the Warriors, Rahmanullah Gurbaz for a duck.
The bowling section of the Kings did well enough to pick up wickets at regular intervals and did not let any big partnership to build. A quickfire cameos from Romario Shepherd and Dwaine Pretorius helped Warriors in leading to the defendable total of 138 runs with 8 wickets down.
Needing 139 runs for the win, the Kings shook in the powerplay and the halfway mark but an unlikely duo of Aaron Jones and Roston Chase did a spectacular job for the team, putting on 88 runs for the 5th wicket and helped their team to be ended on the winning side with 10 balls in hand.
Jones played an unbeaten knock of 48 runs in 31 balls, and Chase, too, remained not out, scoring 39 runs in just 22 balls.
Moreover, Noor Ahmad was awarded the Player of the Tournament for taking 22 wickets and great contribution in the finals as well. Following this exceptional victory, the skipper of the Kings, Faf du Plessis stated that he was looking to get their hands on the trophy for a very long time.
He added that the match was really a low-scoring thriller and lauded the bowling section for that. While shedding light on chasing down the target, he asserted that there is always an opportunity for someone with the bat to be the hero, and it was the time for Aaron Jones to be in the finals.
After this historic win by Saint Lucia Kings in the CPL 2024 finals, the Minister of Tourism of Saint Lucia, Ernest Hilaire, asserted that 2024 belongs to them. He extended congratulations to the entire Saint Lucia Kings franchise for a fantastic victory to win the first CPL Championship.
The Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, Philip J. Pierre also lauded the team for their remarkable efforts and stated that this victory adds to the many reasons that why they are Proud Saint Lucians.
“Another historic victory as we celebrate the Saint Lucia Kings, who captured their first Republic Bank CPL T20 Champions title. The Kings battled against the Guyana Amazon Warriors and won by 6 wickets,” noted Philip J. Pierre.
The Tourism Authority of Saint Lucia also wished them on winning their first-ever CPL title and stated that this victory marks a significant milestone for the team and their island, showcasing the spirit of perseverance and determination that defines them.
“This triumph is not just about cricket; it represents a new era of firsts for Saint Lucia following our historic success in the Olympics.”
