Saint Lucia invests $1.3 million in 7 months for Football players’ fees: PM Pierre
The Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, Philip J Pierre led administration has invested more than $1.3 million over seven months in players fees for the Semi Professional Football league.

Castries, Saint Lucia: The Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, Philip J Pierre led administration has invested more than $1.3 million over seven months in players fees for the Semi Professional Football league. The investment of such significant amount emphasises on the support that the government is extending to the local football community.
It is for the first time, that aspiring footballers are getting paid and recognized for playing this enthralling and exciting game. The Semi Professional Football League is also an innovative idea to developing and enhance the skills, talent and techniques of all the players.
While shedding light on the benefits of the programme, PM Pierre stated that it had opened doors to several opportunities for young people in the boundless world of sports. He noted that it would provide remuneration for their discipline, participation and commitment to the game of football.
Saint Lucia’s first Semi-Professional Football League will also play a crucial role in strengthening the local economy by creating new business connections. It is also creating employment opportunities in coaching, team management, media and broadcasting and playing field maintenance.
PM Pierre also asserted that these investments in young people are being supported by training and certification for technical officials. He also mentioned an $80 million injection by the government to rehabilitate sporting facilities island-wide. He stated that his entire administration is focused on developing the sports sector of the island nation to greater heights and giving significant opportunities to every player who is trying to turn their aspirations into reality.
The leader of the nation also added that he is committed towards dreams and aspirations of the youth sector of his country whether in sports, academia, arts or entrepreneurship. He remarked that government is introducing several programmes and providing fundings through various agencies to help in fulfilling those dreams and wishes of the youth.
PM Pierre also encouraged all the young individuals to take advantage of these opportunities and pursue them with discipline and a positive attitude towards their aim.
Notably Semi Professional Football League was launched in January 2024 and the matches were began in March 2024. The league is a collaboration between the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports and the Saint Lucia Football Association.
