Barbados: Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Dale Marshall, on Sunday said, “Sergeant Newton Lewis died a hero last night.” During his address, Minister Marshall noted that he was off duty when the incident took place, but this means nothing to him because, in his own words, a police officer is always on duty. “He answered a call of distress and paid the highest price possible for answering that call.”
Emphasising gun crime in Barbados, Attorney General said if any good can come of this tragedy, it would have to be the Sergeant Lewis’ life must not have been lost in vain.
Making a clarion call for the public, AG said that let this galvanise all Barbadians into recognition that a gun crime or any sort of crime cannot solely be a matter for Lawrence force meant. Still, people must come forward and be concerned to wrestle it to the ground.
“Enough of the armchair commentary,” the fight cannot be a spectator event, with the members of the community simply wiping out for the police to do more. AG said we all have a stake in this, and we all must join together in this fight against gun crime. “If you see something, say something!”
Edit that the Royal Barbados Police Force has lost a valiant officer, his wife lost a husband and his children lost their loving dad. “I have spoken directly with Mrs Lewis, and on behalf of the government of Barbados, I have assured her that her family will be not left to bear the awesome burden of this tragedy alone,” said AG Marshall.
He also extended his condolences to the entire family, especially Sergeant Lewis’ grieving wife Kathy, his colleagues in the police, who would certainly feel the absence and the community of Rose Hill in St Peter now mourning the demise of Sergeant.
