Kingston, Jamaica: Nature Touch Farms, the producer and distributor of various types of Romaine Lettuces of Jamaica, recently joined an online conference call with a group of highly interested persons in investing and growing passion fruit commercially in Jamaica. During the online meeting, the producer discussed the questions asked by the guests.

Following the meeting, the shared the summary of the session was shared on social media. As per the post, the question asked was, “What Can We Intercrop with Passion Fruits to Increase our Profitability?”

While replying to the same, it stated that passion farmers often ask this question all the time. They want to PROFITABLY utilize the empty space between the passion fruit plant rows. It added, “If you are one of the passionate farmers asking this question, I have good news for you.”

According to Nature Touch Farms, one can intercrop passion fruit with the following crops:
1. Onions
2. Beetroot
3. Amaranth – seeds & leaves can be consumed by humans & used as animal feed.
4. Spinach
5. Kale
6. Parsley
7. Leeks
8. Canola – seeds & leaves can be consumed by humans & used as animal feed.
9. Radish
10. Coriander
11. Aubergines (Eggplant)
12. Ginger
13. Birds eye chilli
14. Thorny Melon
15. Field beans
16. Green grams (Green peas)
17. Millet (Corn)
18. Carrots
19. Rosemary
20. Groundnuts
21. Alfalfa – mainly used to feed horses, cattle & rabbits. Humans can eat it too.

The second question asked was, “Will These Crops Affect Your Passion Plants?” And the reply for the same was, “Not at all. However, additional spraying, weeding, and general maintenance costs will be incurred. The good news about the added costs is: You will harvest more crops from that piece of land.”

Another question asked was, “Will Intercropping Passion Plants Lead to Increased Pest Attacks?” As per the update, the producer replied, “It should not, as long as you practice proper Integrated Pest Management (IPM). There are so many variables that lead to increased pest attacks. And nobody knows with certainty how these variables interact. What this therefore means is, “Go ahead and Intercrop passion fruits with the above crops.”
