President Ali inaugurates historic Kowsilla Community Park, Sakina Mohamed Computer Lab

Georgetown, Guyana: President Dr Irfaan Ali, on Monday, declared opened the Kowsilla Community Park and Sakina Mohamed Computer Lab in Leonora.

The Head of State was joined by the Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand and the Minister within the Ministry of Public Works – Deodat Indar. 

The lab will surely promote learning within the community of Leonara, West Coast Demerara.

The story behind Kowsilla Community Park –

Kowsilla is a historical figure in Guyana; she was murdered on March 6, 1964, when she was run over by a tractor while standing her ground in protest. She and several other women, along with striking sugar workers, were protesting against being denied work and restrictions from choosing a union to represent their interests. 

Kowsilla is revered as a heroine not only in her community but in the entire country. The event coincided with the Leonora Christmas Tree light-up. 

Who was Sakina Mohamed  –

Cde Sakina, as she was popularly known, was not just a hard worker in the Women’s Progressive Organisation; she was a leader, a teacher and a coordinator. She was also President Ali’s grandmother. 

The Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand and the Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar, were also at the opening ceremony.

The general public remembered the efforts of Kowsilla and thanked President Ali for building a park in her name.

While, Rajkumar Singh wrote, “Well deserved recognition of our history and her sacrifice”. 

Remembering Sakina Mohamed, a social media user Jay Ali wrote, “This is great to see our mother is being recognized today, for her dedication and hard work. She was one of the many dedicated and very active members of the party. May her soul rest in Eternal Peace”.
