PM Dickon Mitchell removes Jonathan LaCrette from Cabinet on loss of confidence grounds

Grenada: The Prime Minister of Grenada, Dickon Mitchell removed Youth and Sports Minister Jonathan LaCrette from his cabinet and stated that he had lost trust and confidence in him. The Education Minister, David Andrew will have Sports and Youth added to his portfolio.

While shedding light on the decision undertaken by him, PM Dickon Mitchell noted that LaCrette was involved in such incidents during the past 24 months that were not in the best interest of the citizens of the country. He continued to say that there was no personal issue between himself and LaCrette and there were also no personal issues between him and the ministers of government.

However, he added the decision undertaken is purely an issue of his prime ministerial discretion in relation to Mr LaCrette as a minister. He stated that he as a Prime Minister sitting in the cabinet has formed a view that he had lost his trust and confidence in the capacity of LaCrette as a Minister.

The Prime Minister extended gratitude to LaCrette for his services he has given as a Minister of Government to the people of Grenada. He further made it clear that as a Prime Minister if ever he loses trust and confidence of any minister then he will relieve all the burden of ministerial duties from that Minister of Government.

Additionally, LaCrette will continue to remain a member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC). For the same, the Prime Minister stated that he is looking forward to continue working with LaCrette in his capacity as the member of the National Democratic Progress.

Notably, LaCrette who failed to win the St George’s Northwest constituency in the June 2022 general elections was later appointed as a Senator. He was initially elected to serve his duties as the Minister of Health but during the reshuffling of the Cabinet in January 2024, he was reassigned as the Minister of Youth and Sports.

Following this decision, the netizens lauded Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell for his honesty and for performing his duties diligently. As, they took to their social media accounts and appreciated him, one person commented “This should be done in every government cabinet that has the responsibility to represent the people. If you are not performing then you need to go.” Another commented “We need such Prime Minister who could take such strict decisions for betterment of country.”
