Jamaica: People’s National Party (PNP) spokesperson on health and wellness, Dr Morais Guy, announced that the Opposition rejects any government’s attempt to use expired Oxford Astra Zeneca vaccines.
Dr Morais Guy referred to Minister of Health and Wellness Dr Christopher Tufton not to proceed with any plan to endeavour authorisation from the World Health Organisation and the manufacturers for use after the April 13 expiry date.
Answering the declaration the previous morning by Chief Medical Officer Dr Jacquiline Bisasor-McKenzie, that the Ministry of Health was attempting this plan, Dr Guy is prompting the administration that the European Medical Agency, in a publication on January 29, 2021, explicitly warned against the use of COVID-19 vaccines after expiry dates.
He stated due to the balance of formulations in drugs, they are not to be used after expiry, and this administration is even stricter for vaccines.
Dr Guy declared the use of expired vaccines could expose the Jamaican population to health hazards, and as a consequence, the Opposition is not in accordance with this plan. Furthermore, he wrote, some vaccine manufacturers were already attempting indemnities from authorities to utilise the vaccines.
He stated there already is vaccine-hesitancy in Jamaica, and the administration’s handling of this issue will only serve to strengthen uncertainty.
“Had the administration been forthcoming about the expiration date of the recently received shipment of the vaccine and informed the public of the decreased usage window, I am sure our people would have cooperated with demands for immediate take-up. Alternatively, citizens were left to explore on their own, reducing public assurance. As it is now, some may not even want to inoculate vaccine,” Dr Guy stated.
Moreover, Expired vaccines or drugs should not be utilised as their side effects can cause various diseases which might be uncurable. Sometimes it can cause allergies which can create a disbalance of hormones in the body, sources revealed.
Although people are afraid of inoculation of vaccines and expired, one will increase the rate of petrifying in the population.
