NSC approves pepper spray as ‘device for safety’ in T&T

Trinidad and Tobago: The National Security Council (NSC) in Trinidad and Tobago has approved pepper spray as a “device for safety,” Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi published last week.

Speaking at an interview of the ruling People’s National Movement (PNM), Al-Rawi said he had “drafted the law already.”

“Because of the way of the Prime Minister, after the Minister of National Security did the wise thing to bring plan approved by experts as to what should be done.

“It [pepper spray] is a double-edged weapon because, in the wrong hands, it can be used against you, but we support a fighting chance,” Prime Minister added.

The announcement came to light just days after Independent Senator. Paul Richards filed a proposal calling to approve pepper spray.

“If it saves a life, it is worth it. If it gives women a new hope that the authorizations are hearing their cries daily, on a weekly basis, it is worth it.

Some say that it can get into the hands of criminals. Well, guess what? Criminals now have weapons like guns and knives; they are raping and abusing ladies daily with the exception,” Richards said at the time.

Last week, Opposition UNC Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar also assisted Government in needed to take steps to legalize the application of pepper spray and tasers by many women to provide them defend themselves.

Calls for the green light are also required to be given to managing pepper spray progressed after the abduction and murder of court clerk Andrea Bharatt, who was placed to rest on Friday.

The allowance of pepper spray is a ray of hope for all the women in Trinidad and Tobago. It is a minor step but the starting of revolution in the nation.

No girl would face what Andrea faced, and her death is the revolution that will change Trinidad and Tobago’s future.
