King Charles feels sorry for not attending Grenada’s 50th Independence Anniversary, extends wishes

London, United Kingdom: King Charles III sent a message to Grenada on the occasion of its 50th Anniversary of Independence on February 7, 2024. He expressed his sorrow for not being available to celebrate this momentous milestone and to enjoy a little Oil Down with Grenadians.

The crown head of Britain noted in a message that Grenada is an exemplar of human rights, democracy, and the rule of law to honour the country’s 50th Independence Day. 

“I can only say how sorry I am that I cannot be with you in person to mark this momentous milestone and to enjoy a little Oil Down with you all! My thoughts are with everyone across Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique, and all those in the Grenadian diaspora- “one people, one family”- as you celebrate everything you have achieved and all that your future holds”, King Charles said in his message. 

The King further stated that his Wife, Queen Camilla, has a special place in her heart for Grenada, also called ‘Spice Island’, as she recalled the memories when she visited this island nation five years ago. The Queen received a warm welcome from the authorities as well as the people of the country. 

Continuing his message, the monarch added that he is very happy to see the strength and shared determination of the Grenada community, which makes them different from other nations. 

“In this Grenadian spirit, you can take the greatest pride. Whether through the remarkable contributions of Grenada’s artists, musicians and authors, or the triumphs of your athletes, all of whom have enjoyed such extraordinary success, ‘473 to the World’ is an inspiration to us all,” said the message. 

The main highlight of the Independence Day celebrations was a military parade and Cultural show, which were organised at the National Stadium in St George’s. The event was attended by several government delegates from other Caribbean Nations, such as Dominican Prime Minister- Roosevelt Skerrit, PM of Saint Lucia- Philip J Pierre, and the Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis- Dr Terance Drew, among others. 

It is to be noted that this was King Charles III‘s first public message since his cancer diagnosis. A few days ago, Buckingham Palace issued a statement that the monarch suffers from cancer and is currently undergoing medical treatment.
