Justice Winston Anderson appoints President of CCJ until September

Justice Winston Anderson has been appointed as the President of the Caribbean Court of Justice in the absence of Justice Adrian Saunders until September.

Justice Winston Anderson has been appointed as the President of the Caribbean Court of Justice in the absence of Justice Adrian Saunders until September. He has been appointed by the Prime Minister of Grenada and the current Chairman of the Conference of Heads of Government of Caribbean Community, Dickon Mitchell.

The newly appointed President of CCJ has commenced its services from 2ndAugust and will continue to serve his duties till 16th September 2024.

PM Dickon Mitchell who is also the Chairman of the CARICOM appointed Justice Anderson under the agreement established in CCJ in 2001. The agreement states that the functions of the President of the Court “shall be performed by the Judge of the Court who is most senior according to the date of this appointment and he shall be appointed by letter under the hand of the Chairman for the time being of the Conference.”

As per the details, CCJ President Justice Adrian Saunders is on leave until 16th September 2024. Therefore, according to the agreement, Justice Anderson, who is currently the most senior Judge of the Court has been appointed as the President of the Court as he has been serving his duties as a judge since June 2010.

Notably, Winston Charles Anderson is from Jamaica who was born in 1960 in Saint Ann’s Bay, Saint Ann. He was sworn in as Judge of the Caribbean Court of Justice in a ceremony at King’s House, Jamaica on 15th June 2010. He was also the first Judge whose swearing-in ceremony was specifically held in his country of origin and was the first to give a substantive response to the elevation to the Bench of the CCJ.

Moreover, Justice Anderson was also given the honour of being appointed as the Presiding Judge and Chairman of the apex court in the Seychelles. Along with that in 2011 and 2021, he was invited as the keynote speaker at the 50th and 60th Anniversaries of the Establishment of his Alma Mater, STATHS. And, in 2018, he was acknowledged as one of the most outstanding graduates in the 70 years history of the University of the West Indies.
