Jammu and Kashmir, India: The Sher-E-Kashmir Indoor Sports Complex in Srinagar hosted the two-day Farooq Memorial Open Taekwondo Championships.
The event honoured the late Janab Farooq Ahmed, the renowned creator of Taekwondo in Kashmir, and was put on by the J&K Taekwondo Association under the auspices of the Taekwondo Federation of India.
The competition, which was held under the motto “My Youth, My Pride,” drew more than 700 competitors from all the districts of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, representing various weight classes and age groups.
Rouf Ahmed Bhat, a sports promoter and undersecretary to the government, was with Chief Guest Subash Chander Chhibber, Director of the Department of Youth Services and Sports.
Ishfaq Ahmed, a former international football player who is currently the head coach of Kerala Blasters Football Club, was also honoured during the occasion. The distinguished Special Guests at the event were Hilal Ahmed and Shafiq Ahmed.
“All the competitors and medal winners in the Farooq Memorial Open Taekwondo Championships have my sincere congratulations. Seeing such zeal and dedication for the sport is motivating. The J&K Taekwondo Association deserves praise as well for their tenacious efforts to spread Taekwondo throughout the Union Territory,” Chhibber said.
The awarding of awards to the deserving winners followed the inaugural ceremony. Chhibber and other Association dignitaries gave out the medals, and the coaches and referees received special gifts as a thank you for their important work.
The medal winners from the Farooq Memorial Open Taekwondo Championships will honourably represent J&K at the upcoming LG Cup All India Taekwondo Championships in 2023, showcasing their abilities and willpower on a big scale.
