High Commissioner of India to visit Dominica on Thursday to discuss Choksi’s extradition

Trinidad and Tobago: Following the arrest of Indian fugitive Mehul Choksi in Dominica, High Commissioner of India based in Port of Spain will travel to Dominica on 3 June, 2021 to seek opportunities for Choksi’s extradition to India.

All matters related to Indians in Dominica are subjected to the High-Commission of India, Port of Spain in the sister island of Trinidad and Tobago. A source in the office of Arun Kumar Sahu told Writeups24 that he is planning his visit to Dominica next week regarding Choks’s extradition to India, where he (Choksi) is a fugitive in a USD 2 Billion fraud against India based Panjab National Bank (PNB). Sources told that Mehul Choksi would remain in the custody of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for the next one week, and a more comprehensive result will only arrive after High Commissioner’s meeting on Thursday, 3 June 2021.

It is said that the government of Dominica contacted the High Commissioner of India in Trinidad and Tobago for a more detailed discussion on Choksi’s extradition.

Mehul Choksi was arrested by Dominica police from Canefield near capital city Roseau on late Tuesday evening; the latter charged with illegally entering the country after Interpol issued Yellow Notice against him. He had gone missing as he travelled from his home to a restaurant in Antigua on Sunday evening in sceptical circumstances. Read More.

Authorities in Dominica have alerted all agencies across the Caribbean and India regarding Choksi’s arrest.

India, since 2018 have been demanding the Antiguan government to extradite Mehul Choksi, but the matter is still in court, and the decision is anticipated in few days. Fearing the extradition, Choksi left Antigua to reach Dominica, where he owns a safe house. Dominica was just a route to reach Cuba, where he had planned a long stay to safeguard himself from getting extradited to India.

Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Gaston Browne stated that he wants Choksi to be sent to India and face the law there for the frauds he committed. Read More.
