Guyana: Ron Fletchman granted bail, charged for ammunition possession

Georgetown, Guyana: A mechanic, Ron Fletchman, who was arrested on Saturday, 13th January 2024, for the offence of possessing ammunition, has been granted bail by the court on Wednesday in the sum of $100,000. 

Notably, the man has been identified as 46-year-old Ron Fletchman. He was apprehended under the operation conducted by the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit of Guyana.

As per the details, the exercise was conducted by the officers in Norton Street, Wortmanville, Georgetown, Guyana. When the authorities conducted an investigation into the suspect, Ron Fletchman, they found 11 9mm rounds of ammunition and a .233 ammunition from him. Subsequently, such findings led to the arrest of Ron Fletchman.

Ron Fletchman is a resident of Melanie Damishana, East Coast Demerara, Guyana. After his arrest, the authorities took him to the headquarters of the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit along with the ammunition seized from him. He was subsequently handed over to the Guyana Police Force.

It is to be noted that the accused was presented before Chief Magistrate (ag) Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. Where, the case of Fletchman was represented by an attorney who denied the accusation.

According to the information, the prosecutor raised objections to Fletchman’s release on bail because of the seriousness of the offence the suspect committed.

As per the prosecution, there were no such special circumstances that met the Firearms Act’s requirements to release the accused, Ron Fletchman.

However, in Fletchman’s defence, his attorney stated that the ammunition was discovered on a table at the house where his client was visiting rather than on his client.

Therefore, the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court granted pre-trial liberty to Fletchman. Along with that, the court has been adjourned till now, and the next hearing will held on 21st February, 2024.

During the arrest of Fletchman, the case received a lot of public opinion. As one person with a Facebook account commented, “Too big to get caught up in nonsense bro, mere possession is an offence, and jail time is just moments away. Don’t blame the system, and don’t blame anyone. Two consecutive 36 months in your pocket.”

Meanwhile, other people appreciated the authorities of Guyana who are conducting such exercises to control the increasing crime rate. The officers have also promised to make efforts and take stringent measures to ensure the safety and security of the nation.
