Guyana: Prez Irfaan Ali breaks deal with speed boat operator, caps rate at $100 per person

Guyana: The President of the Republic of Guyana Dr Irfaan Ali brokered a deal with the speed boat operators who work the Georgetown to Vreed-en-Hoop route to have their fare remain at $100 per person on December 11, 2022.

The decision was made after the Head of State met with Demerara River Speed Boat Association members at the National Track and Field Centre in Leonora this evening. The President committed to helping improve the service of the speedboat operators and the landing area while continuously aiding their growth.

Lallbachan Babulal, Vice President of the Demerara River Speed Boat Association, expressed satisfaction with the meeting and said members are looking forward to working with the President to improve the service.

On the same day, President Irfaan Ali surprised 85-year-old Meena Bafan with the keys to her newly rebuilt home today at her Herstelling East Bank Demerara address. The home was rebuilt by the Men on Mission (MoM) after the President saw its state during an outreach in late November.

On December 1, the Head of State led the dismantling and reconstruction of the home before the team of voluntary workers completed the project. While handing over the keys today, the President emphasised that the project will be replicated. He explained that the MoM would construct 150 homes across Guyana for vulnerable persons who have their own lands.

He also lauded the collaborative effort of the private sector and the Government of Guyana, including the police force. “I think this is a real testimony to who we are as a people, as a country, when we can come together like this, and to work with the private sector… this is what is going to transform our country and the way we think and feel about each other,” President Ali mentioned.
