Guyana: Long overdue Cemetery Road Expansion Project to be completed in one week

The long overdue Cemetery Road Expansion Project of Guyana which was supposed to have been completed since last year is expected to be completed in just over one week, stated the Ministry of Public Works. For the same, the authorities are aiming to add several sub-contractors, to make sure the work is done in an effective and efficient manner.

The Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill who made a visit to the project site last week stated that four sections of the $475 million project are being undertaken simultaneously with a vision to meet the deadline and the project does not have to face any other delays.

While shedding light on the project, the Minister noted that the second bridge which is being constructed between Cemetery Road and Princess Street is expected to be completed by mid-week. Meanwhile, culverts are being installed to widen the road for four lanes of traffic at Sussex Street.

The Minister further added that these culverts will be installed with the vision of fast-tracking the works. Notably, these are being executed by sub-contractors who were recently appointed to the project and will be paid from the original contract sum which was awarded to Avinash Contracting.

Additionally, the Minister highlighted the paving works between Sussex Street and Middle Road and stated that it is also currently ongoing by Avinash Contracting.

During his visit recently, the Minister outlined the need to hire additional contractors at the expense of the main contractor with a vision to avoid any further delay in the project which has affected the flow of traffic.

Minister Edghill stated that the contractor needs to show goodwill that he can get that task done in an effective and efficient manner. He stated that if the contractor cannot show that he can get the task done, then they will have to put an additional sub-contractor to execute those jobs and pay them from his contract sum.

For the same, the ministry has also assigned a senior engineer to support the current project engineer in ensuring that the project meets the new deadline.
