Guyana officially launched the 18th annual Berbice Expo and Trade Fair at the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce (CCCC) office in Rose Hall Town. The Fair is all set to be held at the Rose Hall Estate Community Center Ground from October 21 to 24, 2024, announced the management.

Guyana officially launched the 18th annual Berbice Expo and Trade Fair at the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce (CCCC) office in Rose Hall Town. The Fair is all set to be held at the Rose Hall Estate Community Center Ground from October 21 to 24, 2024, announced the management.

It will be held under the theme: ‘Innovation in oil, gas and agriculture for a sustainable future. While shedding light on the theme, the Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha stated that the theme outlines the crucial role of the oil and gas industry in creating several opportunities for businesses and citizens of the region.

He stated that this annual event is a significant platform that brings together stakeholders from across the country, showcasing the strength and diversity of the local businesses.

While emphasising on the oil and gas sector, Minister stated that it has opened new investment avenues in agriculture and other industries, driving modernisation throughout Guyana.

Moreover, the Minister also pointed out that one of the key drivers of agriculture’s business potential in Guyana is the increasing demand for CARICOM to be self-sufficient. He noted that the President of Guyana, Dr Irfaan Ali has also led the charge to see CARICOM reduce its food import bill by 25% by the end of 2025.

Minister Mustapha stated that this initiative has the potential to boost the private sector with the increased production of more than 20 commodities identified under the 25 by 2025 initiative.

The Regional Chairman, David Armogan stated that the four-day event remains one of the largest in Berbice. He stated that this is one of the largest events in this region from the last 18 years. He stated that this event gives the business community, both within and outside the region, an opportunity to showcase their products and gave a platform to the people to see what is available.

The regional chairman also highlighted a initiative that seeks to aid the development of hundreds of residents of the region. He added that initiative is the construction of an oil and gas institute, which, once completed, will cater to 300 students, by offering them essential educational opportunities in the rapidly growing sector.

The President of the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce (CCCC), Poonai Bhigroog, also outlined the need for balance between the benefits of oil and gas and continued investment in agriculture. He stated that this balance ensures that the growth remains inclusive and beneficial to all citizens.

This Berbice Expo and Trade Fair will feature 160 booths, with 50 per cent already reserved. The entrance fee to attend the event is $500. While extending welcome to all the citizens, the authorities noted that this event will provide a space for citizens to engage with local businesses and see the region’s potential on display.
