Jamal Reid, a 16-year-old, suffered a fractured skull and other complications after being struck in the head with a cricket bat by a fellow schoolmate.
A 16-year-old has been identified as a resident of Lot 86 Dochfour, East Coast Demerara, Guyana and a student of Golden Grove Secondary School. Another student from the same school struck his head at 14:30.
The accused has been arrested with the charge of hitting the student with a cricket bat, which led him to face a fractured skull and other health complications.
As per the information shared by the relatives of the victim, he was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation following the blows he received on his head.
The 16-year-old faced severe health complications such as:
– Internal bleeding due to a burst vessel in his head
– Fractured skull to the right-side parietal bone
– Blood clotting under the fractured skull
It was also mentioned by the relatives that Reid had to undergo surgery because of the fractured skull, which caused him blood clotting. Thus, in order to stop the bleeding, he had to go through an operation.
Moreover, Rein was admitted as a patient in the male ward at the health institution after his surgery.
According to the information shared by the relatives of the victim, he had two tubes placed in his head to the left and the right side and a piece of his skull had to be removed from both sides of his head.
On 14th November, the doctor did a CT scan after they noticed some movement in Reid’s hands. The doctors explained to the relatives that the blood clot had some remnants of bleeding after the surgery, which led to an increase in swelling in the brain.
It was explained by the doctors to the victim’s relative that the swelling puts more pressure on the brain and this swelling can lead to death of the victim.
Nevertheless, doctors tried their best in order to reduce the swelling by increasing the medication.
The relatives of the victim also shared that they were already seeing a lack of movement on his left side, due to which he is unable to express his feelings and describe how he feels. They also said that one of the areas that are damaged in Reid’s head is his mobility. This area is highly responsible for the movements in his body.
However, Reid was discharged from the hospital.
Also, the family of the victim is completely grateful to the Ministry of Education for assisting them while Reid was hospitalized.
